How to Measure Your Head for a Western Hat

A western or Australian-style hat should feel secure without leaving a deep pressure mark. The best way to order the right size is to measure your head before choosing a hat.

What you need

  • A soft measuring tape
  • A mirror or someone to help
  • Your usual hat position

How to measure your head

  1. Place the tape about one finger-width above your eyebrows.
  2. Run it above the tops of your ears and around the widest part of the back of your head.
  3. Keep the tape level and comfortably snug. Do not pull it tight.
  4. Record the measurement in both inches and centimeters.
  5. Measure a second time. If the results differ, use the larger measurement.

Choose the safer size

If your measurement falls between two listed sizes, choose the larger size unless the product page says otherwise. A slightly roomy hat can often be adjusted with sizing tape, while a hat that is too tight is difficult to correct.

Hat shapes affect fit

Two hats with the same labeled size may feel different because crown shape, sweatband material, and construction vary. Check the size chart on the specific product page and read the product details before ordering.

Fitted and stretch-fit caps

For fitted, Flexfit, or fitted trucker-style caps, use the same measurement method. Compare your result with the brand's size range. Hickory Ridge Market does not recommend assuming your size from another brand.

Before you buy

  • Confirm the exact size chart for that hat.
  • Check whether the material may relax with wear.
  • Review the return information.
  • Contact us if a size chart is unclear.
